These journeys were not undertaken purely in the spirit of adventure - the driving force behind them was trade. They braved treacherous seas and eventual hostile reception on arrival in an unknown land. At first, they probably ventured only short distances from their home ports but over the centuries their ships sailed further and further across seas and oceans. From our very earliest history, people have travelled the Spice Routes. It is a distance of over 15,000 kilometres and, even today, is not an easy journey. They stretch from the west coast of Japan, through the islands of Indonesia, around India to the lands of the Middle East - and from there, across the Mediterranean to Europe. Taking a tour of the Silk Road will bring you into contact with fabulous places and unique people groups that call it home to this day.The Spice Routes, also known as Maritime Silk Roads, is the name given to the network of sea routes that link the East with the West. The modern Silk Road is full of intriguing cities, traditional cultures, and potential adventures. Of course, in the past is not the only place where the Silk Road belongs. Silk Road tours are now abundantly available in Silk Road countries to give travelers a taste of this grand piece of history. International travelers have recently taken to rediscovering the mystery and allure of the Silk Road passageways. From there, men took to the seas, and a new chapter of history began. The Turks decided to disconnect themselves from the West and thus, the trade routes of the Silk Road were shut down. The heyday of the Silk Road was cut short though in 1453 AD when the Byzantine Empire fell and the Ottoman Empire rose. With Silk Road trading came globalization the likes of which the world had never seen. It was from this point that the Byzantine Empire started producing their own silk, although it would take a long time to perfect.ĭespite this occurrence, silk and other various items continued to travel the Silk Road and with it, the exchange of language, art, philosophy, disease, religion, and architecture to name a few. Quickly leaving the country, the 2 men smuggled some silk worms out of China and brought them back to the West. The “monks” discovered that silk didn’t in fact grow on trees and was instead produced by the silk worm. Enter the spies.Įmperor Justinian decided to send 2 men to China under the guise of being monks to learn the secret to making silk. The Byzantine Empire emerged and the emperor, Justinian, didn’t feel like paying exorbitant prices for silk. However, when the Roman Empire fell in 476 AD is when things began to change. Hence, for hundreds of years, this luxurious material was sold at extravagant prices because no one else knew how to duplicate it. Not wanting to give up their monopoly on the silk market, Chinese silk producers guarded their process with great secrecy. Now at this time, consumers in the West had no idea how silk was produced by the Chinese, which the Chinese took full advantage of. Silk was loved in Rome especially, and became the inspiration for the name of the trade routes between China and the West. When the Great Silk Way first opened the floodgates of international trade, it bridged the East and the West in an exotic dance of export and import that included coveted items such as olive oil, paper, gun powder, animals, amber, furs, medicines, jewels, perfumes, carpets, spices, walnuts, jade, ivory, metals, and of course, silk. The Silk Road Era lasted from about 130 BC – 1453 AD, but let’s not skip over the juicy bits. It wasn’t until the time of the Han Dynasty (202 BC – 220 AD) when it was transformed into the trade routes we think of today. It was a postal road that went from modern day Iran to Turkey used by the Persians. The Silk Road wasn’t actually the Silk Road at first. When westerners envision the trade routes of the Silk Road, many picture merchants struggling against the sands of the desert, leaning into the wind as it whips around their spice-burdened caravans with unrelenting determination, but that’s just the trailer. The story of the Ancient Silk Road is one of adventure, danger, luxury, globalization, and espionage.

It’s a 2-dimensional figure that has 4 sides and 4 vertices. Add that this is a 2-dimensional figure that has 4 equal sides (a quadrilateral), 4 vertices, 2 pairs of parallel sides, and 2 pairs of opposite angles that are equal.ĭraw a trapezoid and add that this is a quadrilateral. Every rectangle has 4 right angles.ĭraw a rhombus on the whiteboard. It’s a 2-D figure that has 2 pairs of opposite sides that are congruent, as well as 4 vertices and 2 pairs of parallel sides. Add that a square is a 2-dimensional figure that has 4 equal sides, 4 vertices, 2 pairs of parallel sides, and 4 right angles.ĭraw a rectangle and add that this is a type of quadrilateral. Every parallelogram also has 2 pairs of opposite sides that are equal, as well as 2 pairs of opposite angles that are equal.ĭraw a square and point out that it falls into the category of quadrilaterals. It has 4 sides, 4 vertices, 2 pairs of opposite sides that are parallel. Add that a quadrilateral is just a flat figure with four sides, all of which connect up and are straight.ĭraw a parallelogram and point out that this is a quadrilateral and thus a 2-D figure. Every triangle has 3 vertices, 3 angles that may or may not be equal:ĭraw a quadrilateral on the whiteboard and explain that a quadrilateral is a 2-dimensional figure that has 4 sides and 4 vertices. Example 1 – Triangle:ĭraw a triangle on the whiteboard and highlight that a triangle is a 2-dimensional figure that has 3 sides that may or may not be equal. Then, provide examples of polygons and their properties. Ask students to circle the ones that are polygons and explain why these qualify as polygons. Also, polygons are always closed shapes – if the figure is open, it does not represent a polygon.ĭraw a few figures on the whiteboard, and make sure to include shapes that are polygons and shapes that aren’t. So polygon means ‘many angles’, and this refers to the angles formed by the straight lines (or sides) of the polygon.Īdd that a polygon always has straight sides – if the figure has one side that has a curve, it does not represent a polygon. Point out that in Greek, ‘poly’ means ‘many’, whereas ‘gon’ means ‘angle’. Thus, we have triangles, squares, rectangles, etc.Īsk students to reflect on the word polygon. It’s a 2-dimensional figure whose name is based on the number of its sides. Explain that a polygon is a closed plane figure, formed by connecting segments that are called ‘sides’. These properties make each 2-dimensional figure special, while there are also some that share common characteristics.Īdd that one example of 2-D figures are polygons. Point out that there are many 2-dimensional figures around us and that each of them has its own unique properties. If students understand the difference between 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional shapes, they should be able to recognize that the cylinder and rectangular prism have height in addition to length and width, and are not flat, hence they’re not 2-dimensional objects. While 2-dimensional shapes are flat figures with length and width, 3-dimensional shapes are solid figures with length, width, and height.ĭraw an example on the whiteboard where there are both 2-dimensional figures and 3-dimensional figures and ask students to circle the 2-dimensional ones. You can draw a distinction between the two to make things clearer. Students have also encountered 3-dimensional shapes. You can include shapes such as the following: If you have manipulatives or images, even better. Add that there are many different 2-dimensional shapes and draw examples of such shapes on the whiteboard. It is a flat plane figure that has no depth or thickness.īy now, students have come across many 2-dimensional shapes. Explain that a 2-dimensional shape (or a 2-D shape) is a shape that only has two measurable dimensions – length and width. Ideas for Teaching 2-Dimensional Shapes and Their Properties What Are 2-Dimensional Shapes?įor starters, define what 2-dimensional shapes are. Use them in your class and see students’ math knowledge soar in no time! Lessons on 2-dimensional shapes can be lots of fun if math teachers are equipped with the right resources! To this end, we bring you a few teaching ideas and awesome activities on this topic. They gain an in-depth understanding of what these shapes represent, and learn how to identify their properties. In grade 5, students learn about the different 2-dimensional shapes, such as circles, squares, triangles, etc. AutomaticĪutomatic chicken waterers connect to a water source, like a hosepipe, and refill the water as it runs out. Though the water that’s dispensed into cups is clean, it’s still important to change the water weekly to prevent it from becoming stagnant. These cups are essentially miniature troughs, and they are easy for chickens to use because water is dispensed as soon as a bird touches the cup. These attachments prevent contamination, but may present a learning curve for birds who aren’t used to drinking water from this type of dispenser.Ĭups, like nipples, provide chickens with cleaner water than they might get from a trough. Nipple-style attachments, which dispense water when chickens push a toggle with their beaks, are a more sanitary option. One problem with these troughs, however, is that chickens inevitably contaminate the water by putting their dirty beaks into it. Many chicken waterers are fashioned with troughs from which the fowl drink. These vessels come equipped with either a trough, cups, or nipples and are made from plastic or metal. Hanging waterers are suspended by a sturdy strap or handle that’s made from metal or heavy-duty plastic. While many chicken waterers are designed to be situated on the ground, hanging chicken waterers elevate the tank and prevent chickens from kicking dirt, food, droppings, or bedding material into the trough, and won’t be knocked over inside the coop. Gravity-fed waterers are made from either plastic or metal and can be hung or placed on the ground. For convenience, the tanks can typically be refilled from either the top or bottom end. Though the trough needs to be cleaned frequently, the water in the tank remains clean and fresh. These vessels use the power of gravity to pull water downward as the trough empties, and a float in the base measures water into the rim at a steady pace to prevent overflowing. Gravity-style chicken waterers, also known as standard waterers, have both a tank and a dish or trough. Some types will work better for your coop or farm setup than others. There are several different styles of chicken waterers, each of which has its advantages and benefits.
